Tenses of the Tulip, The Imperial Mint / Zamanın Lale Hali, Darphane-i Amire, Istanbul

The story of the tulip covers several centuries and vast geographical spaces. For this exhibition Maria Sezer made 3, three works;
“Kiskanan Çatlasin” is a parody on the big amount of trucks that have their backpanels decorated with flowers. Very often these decorations consist of (stylised) tulips. The pride of the driver of his truck shows by the care taken to decorate the truck with such an unlikely symbol of beauty. Is it a decoy to attract the evil eye? Because many of the trucks have writings like “Kiskanan Çatlasin” meaning as much as “Let the jalous one explode”.
The installation called “ These are not Tulips” is a pun on the painting “This is not a pipe” by Magritte.
“Expectation” is an installation that consists of tulipbulbs laid out in the form of a tulipdrawing. The work relates to the difference of what we really see and what we see in our imagination because of our strong longing for beauty or pleasure.
